AI STL Generator: Text or Photo to STL for 3D Printing

An AI STL generator turns a short text prompt or a single photo into a 3D mesh you can download as an STL and send straight to your slicer. With SculptChat's AI 3D generator, you describe or upload, pick an AI model, and download STL, 3MF, or GLB — no CAD skills needed, and new accounts start with 50 free credits.

What an AI STL generator actually does

Traditional 3D modeling means pushing vertices in Blender or sketching constraints in Fusion 360. An AI STL generator skips that: a model trained on millions of 3D shapes reads your prompt or photo and reconstructs a full 3D object, including the sides you can't see.

The result is a mesh — the same kind of geometry an STL file stores. From there it's a normal 3D printing workflow: scale it, orient it, slice it, print it. It's the fastest way to go from an idea to a physical object when you don't need engineering precision.

Text to STL, image to STL, or chat — which should you use?

SculptChat has three ways to make an STL with AI. They suit different jobs:

Text to STL

Type a description like "a cute owl figurine sitting on a branch" and the AI generates the shape. Best for figurines, decorations, props, and anything where the look matters more than exact measurements.

Try text to 3D

Image to STL

Upload one PNG, JPG, or WebP photo (up to 8 MB) and the AI rebuilds the object in 3D. Best when you already have a picture — a toy, a pet, a sketch, or a product shot.

Try image to 3D

Chat for exact dimensions

Describe a functional part in a conversation — "a 60 mm cable organizer with three 8 mm slots" — and refine it message by message. Best for brackets, holders, boxes, and parts that must fit something real.

How to generate an STL file with AI

Step 1

Open the generator

Sign in and open Generate 3D. Every new account gets 50 free credits to start.

Step 2

Describe or upload

Write a short prompt about one object, or upload a single photo with a clear subject.

Step 3

Pick a model & generate

Choose an AI model based on cost and detail. If a generation fails, your credits are refunded automatically.

Step 4

Download & slice

Export STL, 3MF, or GLB — or open the model directly in Bambu Studio — then check scale and supports before printing.

Choosing an AI model: cost vs. detail

SculptChat lets you pick from several leading 3D generation models. One credit is €0.02, so even the most expensive option is a little over two euros. Costs vary with input type and whether you add a texture.

Hunyuan 3D 3.1 Pro

Text & image49 credits

The default. Balanced quality and detail — a good first choice for most objects.

Tripo H3.1

Text & image10–28 credits

The cheapest option, ideal for quick drafts and trying out ideas. Can miss fine details like handles.

TRELLIS 2

Image only28 credits

Stays closest to your photo and is remeshed for clean prints.

Rodin 2.5

Text & image38 credits

High-fidelity shapes. Produces large, dense files.

Meshy 7.1

Text & image75–112 credits

The cleanest geometry in our tests, and the most expensive.

A good habit: draft cheaply with Tripo to test your prompt, then regenerate your favorite idea with a higher-detail model.

Tips for AI-generated STLs that actually print

One subject, plain background: For image to STL, use a photo of a single object, well lit, on a plain background. Clutter and overlapping objects confuse the reconstruction.
Describe one object, not a scene: For text to STL, prompt for a single thing — "a dragon bookend" works better than "a dragon in a castle with knights".
Ask for a flat base: Mention "on a flat base" or "standing on a round pedestal" so the model sits on the print bed without heavy supports.
Check scale and wall thickness: Set the real size in your slicer and look at the preview. Fine details that look great on screen can be too thin to print at small sizes — scale up if needed.
Need exact measurements? Use chat: AI generators are great at shape, not tolerances. For parts that must fit, design them in the chat with dimensions in millimetres.

STL, 3MF, or GLB — which download?

STL

The universal 3D printing format. Pick it for single-color prints in any slicer.

3MF

Keeps color information — the right choice for multi-material printers.

GLB

The full textured model, for viewing or using outside 3D printing.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI STL generator?

SculptChat gives every new account 50 free credits, which is enough for several generations with the cheaper models — for example, a Tripo text-to-3D draft costs 10 credits. After that, credits cost €0.02 each, and failed generations are refunded.

Which file format should I download for 3D printing?

Download STL for single-color prints — it opens in every slicer. Choose 3MF if you want to keep color information for a multi-material printer. GLB is best for viewing the textured model or using it outside 3D printing.

Can I print an AI-generated STL straight away?

Often, yes. Open the file in your slicer, set the size you want, make sure it sits flat on the bed, and check the preview for thin walls or floating parts. SculptChat can also open the model directly in Bambu Studio.

Why does an AI-generated model sometimes need repair?

AI models reconstruct shape from a prompt or a single photo, so they have to guess hidden sides and fine details. That can produce very thin features, small holes, or details that are too fine to print at small sizes. Most slicers repair minor mesh issues automatically; scaling the model up or choosing a model that produces cleaner geometry also helps.
