How to 3D Print a Model Bigger Than Your Build Plate
To print bigger than your build plate, split the model into parts that each fit your printer, then join them after printing. An STL splitter with connectors does both jobs at once: it cuts the model and adds pins, keys, or magnet pockets to every cut face so the parts line up perfectly. SculptChat's free Split & Join tool runs in your browser, knows the build volume of popular printers, and needs no account or credits.
Splitting an oversized model in three steps
You don't need CAD software or a slicer's cut tool. Load the model, let the splitter work out where the cuts go, and download parts that are ready to slice.
Load your model & pick your printer
Drop in an STL, 3MF, OBJ, GLB, or GLTF file. OBJ files don't store units, so check the size after loading. Then choose your printer preset or type in a custom build volume — a 5 mm safety margin is kept clear around each edge by default.
Auto-split, then fine-tune
Auto-split places evenly spaced cuts along every axis that's too big, then halves any part that still doesn't fit — up to four rounds. A part counts as fitting if it fits in any orientation. Move, add, or remove cuts and pick a joint for each one.
Export, print & assemble
Download a ZIP with one STL per part, a combined all-parts.3mf, a fit-test coupon, and an ASSEMBLY.md with a parts list. Print the coupon, then the parts, and join them.
Printer presets and build volumes
Pick your printer and the splitter uses its build volume to decide how many cuts are needed. If yours isn't listed, choose Custom and enter the X, Y, and Z size in millimetres.
| Printer | Build volume (mm) |
|---|---|
| Bambu Lab A1 / P1S / X1C | 256 × 256 × 256 |
| Bambu Lab A1 mini | 180 × 180 × 180 |
| Prusa MK4 / MK3S+ | 250 × 210 × 220 |
| Prusa XL | 360 × 360 × 360 |
| Creality Ender 3 / V3 | 220 × 220 × 250 |
| Elegoo Neptune 4 | 225 × 225 × 265 |
| Creality K1 Max | 300 × 300 × 300 |

An STL splitter with connectors: which joint should you use?
Every cut can carry its own joint. By default each cut gets two round pins (5 mm wide, 6 mm deep, 0.2 mm clearance), and you can use one to six joints per cut. Here's how the interlocking joints compare:
Round pin
Friction fit and a good all-rounder. The pins work like dowels that are printed onto one half. The default choice.
Keyed pin
A pin with a flat side, so the halves can't twist. Use it when a joint has only one or two connectors.
Cross pin
A cross-shaped pin that prints support-free in any orientation. Handy when parts can't lie with the cut face down.
Loose key
The strongest option. A separately printed key plugs into pockets in both halves, so neither part has a fragile peg sticking out.
Alignment cone
A steep taper that centres the halves for gluing. Fastest to print; the glue does the holding.
Magnet pocket
Removable. Pockets for two disc magnets per joint, glued in, so you can take the model apart for transport.
Prefer a plain flat face? Choose Glue only. You can also mix joints: for example, loose keys on a load-bearing cut and alignment cones on a decorative one.
Where to place your cuts
Auto-split gets every part onto the bed, but a few manual tweaks make the finished model look better and print more reliably. Cuts are flat planes along the X, Y, or Z axis, and a model can be split into up to 24 parts.
Split STL or split 3MF — what you get in the download
One STL per part
Each part, plus any loose keys, as its own STL. Ideal for printing parts one plate at a time in any slicer.
all-parts.3mf
Every part in a single 3MF, so you can arrange them across multiple plates in Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, or OrcaSlicer.
The ZIP also includes the fit-test coupon and an ASSEMBLY.md file listing every part and any hardware you need, such as magnets.

Frequently asked questions
Is the STL splitter free?
Yes. Split & Join runs entirely in your browser and uses no credits. You only need to sign in if you want to save a project.
Which file formats can I split?
STL, 3MF, OBJ, GLB, and GLTF. OBJ files don't store units, so check the model's size after loading one.
How many parts can a model be split into?
Up to 24 parts. Cuts are flat planes along the X, Y, or Z axis, and a part counts as fitting if it fits your build volume in any orientation.
What clearance should the joints use?
The default is 0.2 mm, which suits most well-tuned printers. Print the included fit-test coupon first: if the joint is too tight, raise the clearance; if it's loose, lower it.
Can I take the parts apart again?
Yes, with the Magnet pocket joint. It adds pockets for two disc magnets per joint, so the model can be separated for transport or storage.
